Although many parents and teachers believe school uniforms improve student behavior, researchers at The Ohio State University have found that this may not be true.

부모와 교사들은 교복을 입는 것이 학생들 행동을 개선해준다고 믿지만, 오하이오주 대학 연구진들은 사실이 아니라는 것을 밝혀냈다.

 

The study, published in Early Childhood Research Quarterly, used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study. This followed 6,320 US students from kindergarten to the final year of elementary school, or from about age 5 to age 10.

ECRQ에 기재된 연구는 유아 종적 연구의 데이터를 사용했다. 이 연구는 유치원부터 초등학생까지, 혹은 5살부터 10살 학생들 6,320명의 미국 학생들을 지켜봤다.

 

Every school year, teachers rated students' social skills and behavioral problems, including anxiety and aggression. They also noted how often each student was absent from class.

매 학년, 교사들은 학생들의 사회성과 불안감과 공격성을 포함한 행동 장애를 평가했다. 또한, 얼마나 자주 학교를 결석했는지도 확인했다.

The researchers found that uniforms did not affect social skills or behavior. However, students from low-income families in schools that require uniforms did have better attendance, but this difference was less than one day per year.

연구진들은 교복이 사회성이나 행동에는 영향을 미치지 않는다는 것을 발견했다. 하지만, 저소득층 가정의 학생들은 교복 착용을 해야 하는 학교에서 출석률이 더 높았지만, 이 차이는 1년에 하루도 채 되지 않았다.

 

In the final year of elementary school, the students also reported on their own feelings and experiences, including their sense of belonging, and their experiences of bullying and social anxiety.

초등학교의 마지막 학년에, 학생들은 그들의 감정과 소속감, 따돌림, 사회적 불안 등에 대한 경험을 말했다.

 

The researchers found that school uniforms did not have an effect on the students' experiences of bullying or social anxiety. However, those who had to wear uniforms reported a lower sense of belonging, compared with students that attended schools that didn't require uniforms.

연구진들은 교복이 학생들의 따돌림이나 사회적 불안감에 영향을 주지 않는다는 것을 발견했다. 하지만 교복을 입는 학생들은 그렇지 않은 학생들보다 낮은 소속감을 느낀다고 전했다.

Arya Ansari, the study's lead author, noted that the data doesn't explain this finding, but suggested that it may be because students aren't able to express themselves through clothing when they're wearing a uniform.

이 연구의 주요 저자인 Arya Ansari는 그 데이터가 이번 발견을 설명하지는 않지만 학생들이 교복을 입을 때 옷을 통해 자신을 표현할 수 없기 때문일 수 있다고 말했다.

 

Ansari said this research is important because school uniforms are becoming more popular in the US. In the 2011-2012 school year, 20% of public schools required uniforms, compared with just 3% in 1995-1996. Uniforms were required in 60% of private schools in 2011-2012.

Ansari는 이번 연구는 미국에서 교복이 점점 더 인기를 얻고 있기 때문에 중요하다고 말했다. 1995년도부터 1996년도에는 단지 3%에 불과하였는데, 2011년부터 2012년도에는 공립학교 20%가 교복 착용을 요구하였으며, 사립학교의 60%에서도 교복 착용을 요구하였다.
